MEASURING TOOLS.

How to read and use outside micrometer (1/1000 inch.)?

Become familiar with the anatomy of a micrometer. The following numbers correspond to the diagram in the introduction.

The Step to use and read micro meter.

1. Make sure that whatever you are measuring is clean and has no burrs on the edges.

2. Place the object between the anvil and spindle.

3. Spin the ratchet until the spindle meets object.

4. Spin ratchet until you hear 3 clicks.

5. Verify both the anvil and spindle are touching the object evenly.

6. Set the thimble lock while the micrometer is still on the object.

7. Remove the micrometer from the object once it's been locked.

Reading

1. Note that the measurement will start with the whole number 2.___”

2. Look at the 100 thousandths markings in the stock (2.5).

3. Look at individual 25 thousandths markings exposed next to the 100 thousandths, i.e. after the 5 (.25).

4. Find the number and corresponding marking on the thimble scale closest to but underneath the measurement line on the stock (20).

5.Add that number to the 25 thousandths marking (20 + 25), measurement should read so far 2.545".

EXAMPLE MICROMETER READINGS.

1. Example.

The first step is to read how many hundred thousandths are visible to the left of the thimble BLUE) and write it down.  The second step is to look for visible .025 inch lines on the sleeve (GREEN) and write that below the blue number. The third step is to look on the thimble for thousandths and write that at the bottom.

Now add them
.500"+ .075" (three times .025 X 3= .075) +.007"= 0.582"

If the micrometer is larger than a zero to one inch micrometer you must add the appropriate number of inches to this reading.

2. Example.

The first step is to read how many hundred thousandths are visible to the left of the thimble (BLUE) and write it down. The second step is to look for visible .025 inch lines on the sleeve (GREEN) and write that below the blue.

Now add them
0.400" +0.000"+0.024"= 0.424"

If the micrometer is larger than a zero to one inch micrometer you must add the appropriate number of inches to this reading.

3. Example.

Now add them.
.100+.000 +.010+.110

If the micrometer is larger than a zero to one inch micrometer you must add the appropriate number of inches to this reading.
